Prof. Zirm was a pioneer in the field of new surgical and diagnostic methods. His worldwide recognition led to his honorable admission to the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club (IIIC), a selection of the world’s best eye surgeons and scientists. Prof. Zirm was particularly honored for the development of the diagnostic and research facility (SFVT), which to this day serves both the quality control of operations and the training of ophthalmologists.

The slit lamp allows for the examination of various structures in the eye with high precision and detail. Through accurate diagnosis of eye problems, appropriate treatment can be planned and monitored.
Intraocular pressure measurement serves to assess the risk of eye diseases such as glaucoma. The measurement is performed with a tonometer and is completely painless.
Biometry in ophthalmology serves for precise measurement of the eye – especially before surgery such as lens replacement. It helps in selecting the optimal artificial lens and protects against incorrect decisions by the doctor.
The Pentacam analyzes corneal structure, including thickness and curvature, and is used in planning refractive surgery procedures such as LASIK. This non-invasive instrument is quick and easy to use, enhancing patient comfort.
OCT provides high-resolution images of the retina and other eye structures, enabling more precise diagnoses and treatments, and improving patient care. It detects changes early, before symptoms appear, and reduces the need for invasive procedures.
The nyktometer is used to assess driving ability and night vision. This diagnostic instrument is particularly important because age and various diseases can impair night vision.
The Ishihara test is used to diagnose red-green color blindness. The test consists of color plates with embedded numbers that are not visible to people with color vision deficiency.
In modern pediatric consultations – especially within the framework of the Mother-Child Pass – a non-contact, child-friendly refraction device is almost always used.

120 years ago, Prim. Dr. Eduard Zirm performed the first successful corneal transplant in Olomouc, in what was then the imperial province. A milestone in ophthalmology that has given countless patients excellent vision.
The excellent surgical result achieved through a corneal transplant allowed the previously blind bricklayer Alfons G. to see very well until the end of his life.
Today, his grandson Univ.-Prof. Dr. Mathias Zirm, and his daughter Dr. Anna Schmittinger-Zirm, FEBO, enthusiastically continue the legacy of their grandfather and great-grandfather, respectively, in the spirit of their great role model Dr. Eduard Zirm in Vienna and Innsbruck.
It was Prim. Dr. Eduard Zirm who performed the first successful corneal transplant in 1905. An achievement that is still recognized worldwide today.
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Mathias Zirm, in the third generation, inherited his grandfather’s innovative spirit. More than 20 patents by Prof. Zirm for surgical instruments and training devices facilitate the work of ophthalmologists worldwide today.
Prof. Zirm’s innovations also find application in telemedicine.
